The development of business travel in the nineteenth century
was when it began to be known as a travel arrangement system called the Travel
Agent. Progress in the field of transportation, both land, sea and air
transportation colors the beginning of the nineteenth century. The increasing
number of people who make this journey can be fulfilled because of progress in
the construction of hotel accommodations in several important countries and
cities in the world. The presence of hotel accommodation in a country and the
advancement of transportation systems make it easy for people to travel.
The figure who raised the Travel Agent profession as one of
the branches of business is Thomas Cook. Thomas Cook was born on November 22,
1808 in the city of Melbourne, Derbyshire (England). At that time many
predicted that Thomas Cook was a person who was a defector and would not be a
good worker. When he was 10 years old, he left school, then he tried to work
for a company. However, he did not feel at home then often moved from one
company to another. Thmas Cook is easily bored, because he feels that he doesn't
feel comfortable working for a company, let alone becoming a permanent worker.
Nevertheless, Thomas Cook is a creative person. He noticed and studied the
increasingly rapid development of transportation. In addition, he also paid
attention to the development of hospitality accommodation. Along with the
development of transportation and accommodation facilities, every important
city in the world is established, hotels and all facilities. Suddenly an idea
arose in the mind of Thomas Cook to organize a tour by train.
Cook carefully examined the route first and made a 60-page
travel handbook. This is the first travel brochure. "Advertising for trade
is steam for the engine," he said, stating that his mission is to make a
trip that is "easy, cheap, and safe for others." He also turns a
blind eye to some passengers who drink excessively, arguing that this would be
lesson for others.
On July 5, 1841, Thomas Cook carried out his idea by holding
his first tour. He organizes tour trips from the City of Leicester to the City
of Lougboruogh. This tour is the first and most historic tour. He named the
tour as "A Round Trip Excursion". To take part in the tour, each
participant is charged 1 shilling. Surprisingly, there are quite a lot of
people who want to take part in the tour, which is 500 people.
Because of the large number of participants in the tour, he
chartered a train from a railway company called Midland Counties Railway
Company. Thomas Cook gets a commission of 5% of the sale price of train
tickets. That is when the commencement of the commission system became known in
the world of travel agents or travel business. This tour program went smoothly
and received a warm welcome. Therefore, Thomas Cook is considered to be the
world's first travel regulator. Four years later, the effort pioneered by
Thomas Cook, including planning, organizing, and organizing tour trips.
